Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury resigns as Bengal Congress President; successor speculations begin

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has stepped down as the chief of the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee (WBPCC). The resignation came after a meeting of the state unit was convened to review the party's disappointing performance in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections. While Chowdhury has confirmed his resignation, there is no official confirmation yet from the Congress leadership on whether his resignation has been accepted.

Chowdhury stated, "Since Mallikarjun Kharge became the Congress's national president, there was no state president. Now when the full-time President is appointed you will all come to know that." His resignation has sparked speculation over who will succeed him as the new WBPCC chief.

The announcement comes a day after Congress's Rajya Sabha member and former Union Finance Minister, P Chidambaram, had a 35-minute meeting with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at the state secretariat Nabanna.

Adhir Chowdhury, a five-time Lok Sabha MP from Murshidabad's Baharampur constituency, was defeated by Trinamool Congress's celebrity candidate and former Indian cricketer Yusuf Pathan.
